Question: Some people think schools should teach practical skills such as cooking and managing money, while others believe schools should focus on academic subjects. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Estimated writing band7.0

This is a well-structured essay that addresses the task effectively. The main area to improve is grammatical accuracy, particularly subject-verb agreement and punctuation. With more careful proofreading, the essay could achieve a higher band.

The essay fully addresses the question, presents a clear position, and develops main ideas with some support, though a few points could be extended further.

The essay demonstrates a variety of sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences, though some grammatical errors remain.

What's costing you the most marks

  1. Subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'skills...is', 'subjects...gives').

The essay at band 8 Full feedback

Nowadays, there is ongoing debate about what children should learn at school. Some believe that practical skills like cooking and managing money are more useful, while others think schools must focus on academic subjects. In my opinion, both are important, but academic subjects should remain the core of education.

The rewrite keeps the writer's position and ideas; the full report has every paragraph, plus a comment on each one.

How the IELTS writing checker scores your essay

Writing is marked on four criteria that count equally. The checker scores each one from 0 to 9 in half bands, then averages them for your overall writing band.

CriterionWhat the checker looks at
Task ResponseWhether you answer every part of the question, keep one clear position, and support your main ideas with relevant explanation and examples. Essays under 250 words lose marks here.
Coherence and CohesionA logical order, one central idea per paragraph, linking words that fit (not forced), and clear references back to earlier ideas.
Lexical ResourceRange and precision of vocabulary, natural word combinations, less common words used correctly, and spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and AccuracyA mix of simple and complex sentences, how many sentences are error-free, and punctuation.

Mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Answering only part of the question. "Discuss both views and give your opinion" needs both views and your opinion.
  • No clear position. Say what you think in the introduction and keep to it in every paragraph.
  • Under 250 words. Short essays lose Task Response marks however good the English is.
  • Memorised phrases and forced linking words. "Moreover" at the start of every sentence reads as mechanical.
  • Repeating the same words. Paraphrase the question and vary key nouns and verbs.
  • Run-on sentences and comma splices. Long sentences full of errors score lower than shorter correct ones.

Questions

Is this an official IELTS score?
No. It's an AI estimate from an independent practice tool. We are not affiliated with IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge. Use it to see where you stand and what to fix before test day.
How is the overall writing band worked out?
The four criteria count equally. We average them and round down to the nearest half band, so four scores of 7, 6.5, 6.5 and 6.5 give 6.5. The real test also combines Task 1 and Task 2, with Task 2 counting more.
How reliable are the scores?
Before we change the AI model, we test it on essays that have published examiner scores and keep the one whose scores come closest. It's still an estimate: a human examiner can differ, especially on Task Response.
Does it work for General Training?
Yes. Writing Task 2 is the same essay task in Academic and General Training, and it's marked on the same four criteria.
Can it check Task 1?
Not yet. Task 1 (Academic charts and General Training letters) is next on our list. For now the checker is built for Task 2 essays.
How many words should my essay have?
Task 2 asks for at least 250 words. The checker accepts 80 to 600 words, and it will tell you if a short essay is costing you marks.
What happens to my essay?
It's stored privately so you can see your history. We never publish it or use it to train AI models, and you can delete any check, or all of them, from your account.
Is it free?
Yes: 1 check a day without signing up, or 3 a week with a free account, with every band score. Full corrections and the band 8 rewrite come with a paid plan.
